Link Between Celiac Disease and Diabetes

A Swedish study has found that children suffering from an allergy to gluten have a greater risk of becoming diabetic later in life.

The researchers at Örebro University Hospital used the Swedish National in-patient register for the period between 1964 and 2003 to identify more than 9000 individuals who had been diagnosed with celiac disease, which is caused by a gluten allergy.

Their results are published in the journal “Diabetes Care”, along with a Danish study that found that celiac disease is common in children with type 1 diabetes.
