Unemployment Change Hurts Unions

As the center-right government’s controversial reform of the unemployment compensation system goes into effect, unions are reporting more and more members are opting out of paying for unemployment insurance.

The Swedish system is administered through the unions. The government’s plan reduces benefits for those without work, and doubles or triples the fees paid to take part in the system. According to Swedish Radio News, one-third of the labor unions surveyed report that they are losing members who are opting out of the unemployment insurance system.

Many are considering change their bylaws so that members can stay in the union, without paying for unemployment insurance.
