Computer use in hospitals can be dangerous for patients

Safety checks in the Swedish healthcare system show more and more reliance on computers is leading to records being mixed up and people being given the wrong treatment.

The computer systems are becoming so advanced, they can now be used to make a diagnosis and whereas before they handled basic patient information, now they organise things like X-rays and ECGs.

Following the checks, Sweden’s National Board of Health and Welfare, and the Medical Products Agency are now going to tighten up demands on those who provide the systems so it is easier to see who is responsible for them if something goes wrong.
