Step forward in hopes for Darfur agreement

There has been progress in efforts to start peace negotiations following the visit of the UN’s special envoy to Darfur, Swede Jan Eliasson.

One of the most important rebel groups in the province says it is now prepared for talks with Khartoum.

Jan Eliasson has now met several of the rebel factions and is trying to persuade them to come together to form one party to negotiate a peace agreement with the Sudanese government.

Hundreds of thousand have been killed and two million have fled their homes during the four year conflict between government-backed Arab militias and the rebel groups who claim black Africans in Darfur are being oppressed.
