Swedish FM proposes EU reward if Serbia approves Kosovo plan

Sweden’s Foreign Minister says Serbia should be offered the prospect of joining the European Union, if it accepts a UN plan for the future of the breakaway province of Kosovo.

Carl Bildt, who is a former international envoy to the Balkans, told an Austrian newspaper he believes that way Belgrade would be able to live with the proposal, which gives Kosovo independence in all but name, and with time it could even accept it.

But he warns if a European option is not offered, there is a risk that Serbia will sink back into nationalism, which would block a solution for Kosovo.

Ethnic Albanian leaders from Pristina and Serbian negotiators are due to meet on Wednesday in Vienna to discuss the plan, which Serbia hopes Russia will veto when it is put before the UN Security Council.
