Needless deaths in Swedish hospitals

It is being claimed thousands of hospital patients are dying unnecessarily in Sweden every year because of accidents or wrong treatments.

The National Board of Health and Welfare says it is a serious problem, and it is going to try to come up with exact figures of how many are dying needlessly.

It says too many patients are being given the wrong medicine or diagnosis, operations are going wrong, and sometimes problems are simply down to staff not washing their hands.

Some doctors admit not enough steps are taken to make sure the same mistakes do not keep happening again and again, medical staff are often reluctant to admit they have done something wrong and the system for reporting errors is too complicated.
