Volvo Truck Deliveries Drop

Sweden’s Volvo, the world’s number two truck maker, reports a 6 percent year-on-year drop in truck deliveries in January.

Volvo says deliveries of its Mack brand were down 47 percent, while deliveries from Renault Trucks fell 22 percent. Deliveries from Volvo-labelled trucks rose 30 percent compared with the year-earlier period.

Truck sales in Volvo’s North American market were boosted last year by customers choosing to buy older, but cheaper, trucks ahead of new tougher emission rules introduced in the United States at the end of 2006.

But analysts and truck makers predict a sharp fall in truck sales in the coming months after the spending spree in North America on older trucks comes to an end.
