King Carl Gustaf (l) and Emperor Akihito

State Visit to Japan

Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia began their state visit to Japan Monday, the first since 1980.

The Royal couple are accompanied by representatives of the government including Foreign Minister Carl Bildt and Minister for Health and Social Affairs Göran Hägglund.

Representatives from Swedish industry are also in Japan, as well as a special delegation focusing on health care.

Sweden’s King and Queen were welcomed to Japan by the country’s Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko at a special ceremony at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.

Despite Japan being hit by an earthquake and several after shocks over the past few days the official visit has note been affected.

The state visit ends March 29th.
