In Thursday night’s debate Sahlin described the Sweden Democrats as a ”misogynistic amd xenophobic ” right wing party.
All the major parties in Sweden declined to engage in debate with the Sweden Democrats in the run up to last September’s general election. But the policy of isolation seems to have failed, as the party received a record 2.9 percent of the vote.
In recent weeks, Åkesson has taken part in studio debates with the party secretaries of the Liberal and Conservative Moderate parties.
In last night’s TV 4 debate, Sahlin said Åkesson’s party was a threat to a Sweden many love, an open, unprejudiced and tolerant Sweden.
Most of the debate centered around the issue of immigration.
