"Safe" Cluster Bombs Disputed

There’s been strong criticism of claims from Defence Minister Mikael Odenberg that Sweden’s cluster bombs aren’t dangerous to civilians.

On Thursday all of the parties in the Swedish parliament agreed that the country should continue to push for a worldwide ban on cluster bombs, but the Defence Minister later said that shouldn’t include Sweden’s so-called Bombkapsel 90.

The international Cluster Munition Coalition says the claim  is absurd and that even though the Swedish bombs are said to be more reliable than other types, many could be left unexploded after a campaign and could later kill or maim people.

The CMC says Sweden needs to decide whether it is actually for a ban, or against it like the US, China and Russia.
