Restrictions on Unemployment Benefits

The center-right Swedish government has succeeded in getting its controversial changes to unemployment benefits through Parliament.

The changes mean that to stay on benefits, the unemployed will have to look for work outside their chosen profession and throughout Sweden from the first day they are out of work, rather than waiting 100 days as is the case now.

Under the new rules, which come into effect on July 1, training programs and work placements will also count towards the 300 day limit to unemployment benefit.
