Post-Operation Pain a Danger

One-third of people who’ve recently had an operation are left in so much pain that it is dangerous for their recovery, according to a new Swedish study.

Anaesthetist Åsa Rudin says if someone is in a lot of pain it means they are less likely to get out of bed, so they’ll move less, won’t breath properly and therefore have more chance of developing complications such as blood clots and pneumonia.

She says a new method could help decide in advance who is likely to suffer the most after an operation and patients should be tested beforehand to work out what pain relief they’ll need.
