Radio Sweden Special

In today’s programme to mark Sweden’s national day, we meet one of this country’s most recognisable and respected figures - Queen Silvia.

The Swedish monarchy is one of the world’s oldest and is firmly rooted in a Swedish parliamentary democracy. The monarchy in Sweden goes back a thousand years and the current royal family, the House of Bernadotte, has reigned since the early 1800’s.

While Swedish royality has often had strong international ties, Queen Silvia’s cosmopolitan credentials are a leap apart. A German-Brazilian, she is a trained interpreter and the first Swedish Queen who has pursued an international career.

In Sweden, she’s often given credit for modernising the role of Queen and anchoring the monarchy to a strong commitment to social issues - particularly the plight of women and children in the developing world.
