Possible Changes in Press Subsidies

The Swedish Ministry of Culture is sending a delegation to Brussels next week to discuss plans to change the unique system of subsidies here for newspapers with the European Commission.

The assistance is aimed at maintaining a diversity of media opinion, but the ministry is now proposing certain adjustments in line with views expressed previously by the commission.

Changes could include taking away support for newspapers with circulations greater than 40,000 which would mean a huge loss of income for some like the national daily ”Svenska Dagbladet”, which supports the center-right government.
