Wave Power Research Investment

The Swedish energy company Vattenfall has announced it will invest some 2 million US dollars into wave power technology research.

Researchers from Sweden’s Uppsala University, are to evaluate the effectiveness of wave power at a research installation off the west coast of Sweden. Mats Leijon, Professor of Electricity at the university, says ”Vattenfall is one of several organizations funding the project and their support is vital for driving Swedish wave power research forward.”

The co-operation between Vattenfall and Uppsala University will evaluate energy production through a total of ten generators, deployed between now and 2009.

A number of other companies and organizations are funding the project, including the Swedish Energy Agency.

The wave energy initiative is designed to support the European Union’s objective that member states obtain 20 percent of their energy from renewable resources by the year 2020.
