The event is being held at the Arlandastad golf center just north of Stockholm.
The current champion is Scotland’s Marc Warren, and it’s been nine years since a Swede took the title, when Jesper Parnevik won in 1998. This year’s competition runs until 19th August.
In women’s soccer, Umeå has taken the Swedish Cup after a thrilling final with Stockholm side AIK. Umeå led 3-0 at halftime, with two of those goals scored by Brazilian Marta Vieira da Silva, the FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year. Umeå saw their their rivals fight back to tie the score at 3-3 with just ten minutes to go.
But Marta completed her hat-trick six minutes later, as the league champions held on for a famous cup victory.
Former England manager Sven Göran Eriksson, meanwhile, has continued his winning start at the helm of Manchester City in England’s Premier League. Eriksson, who recruited eight new players since taking over last month, has seen his side win their first two matches this season. Wednesday’s victory saw Manchester City score their first home goal since New Year’s Day.
But it’s not been such a good week for Sweden’s only representative in the UEFA Champions League. Reigning Swedish league champions Elfsborg lost the first leg of their qualifying game against Spain’s Valencia 3-0. The return leg is to be played in Borås, western Sweden, on 29th August.
