Football violence

It was a bad night for football in Sweden Thursday as over 20 fans were taken into police custody around the country for hooliganism.

The two flash points were Stockholm side AIK’s UEFA cup tie against Israel’s Hapoel Tel Aviv, and southern Swedish Helsingborg’s match against the Dutch side Heerenveen.

Up to 50 hooligans were involved in the riots in Stockholm, attacking police vans and armed with sticks and poles.

In Helsingborg the Swedish supporters attacked the hotel where the visiting Dutch players were staying, despite the home side having won the match.
