Vasa Race 2008 Fully Booked

Next year’s giant annual Vasa Ski Race has now been fully booked – with 15,837 Swedish and foreign participants signed up for next March.

The 90-kilometer race is one of the biggest winter events in this Scandinavian nation – and follows the rout of a Swedish nobleman in 1521 – who was stirring a revolt against the Danish king who ruled over Sweden.

Gustav Vasa at first failed to get several central towns to support him and had to flee to Norway to escape from Danish troops.

The townsmen changed their minds and sent their 2 best skiers to catch up to him and bring Gustav back  – to defeat the Danes and get himself crowned as king of Sweden.
