EU Sanctions Against Burma Tightened

EU leaders decided Monday night to tighten sanctions against the military junta in Burma.

The Burmese generals will be banned from visiting the EU, and all their assets here will be frozen. Trade in timber, metals and precious stones will also be stopped.

Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt says that even though it isn’t much, it’s a start and sends an important signal to the Junta and the opposition in Burma. The EU is also to look into newer, smarter kinds of sanctions including limiting European companies’ investments in the country.
