Not in Sweden

No Swedish FBI

Swedish Minister of Justice Beatrice Ask has rejected a proposal from the National Police Board to create a Swedish counterpart to the American FBI.

The board has called for the creation of a special agency of between 200 and 300 police officers to fight serious organized crime. The police say they currently lack the resources centrally, and 21 local police departments have to deal with the problem individually.

But Justice Minister Ask says there are no current plans for a major reorganization of the Swedish police. She says there are a number of other projects with a greater priority.
