As recently as last week, a 16-year-old boy underwent psychiatric observation following the rape of a 50-year-old woman.
The rise in numbers is easy to follow both in the number of cases presented and convictions. According to a report from 1999, 72 people were convicted for sexual offences under the age of 20. That number rose to 161 in 2006.
The Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention also pointed out that there are a number of incidents where the offenders are under the age of 15 and therefore not reflected in crime statistics.
