Pornography Banned in Swedish Prisons

The Swedish Parliament on Wednesday concluded the debate on whether prisoners should be allowed access to certain material such as pornography.

Currently correctional facilities in Sweden have little power deciding what material is deemed suitable, but from the 1st of April they will be given the power to not only stop certain pornographic material, but also any reading material they deem is non-beneficial for the prisoner in regard to the treatment they undergo.

Summing up the stance a spokesperson from the Christian Democrat party said that in the duration of a prison sentence the person is under rehabilitation, and it is not reasonable to think a prisoner serving time for sexual crimes would then be allowed access to pornography.

There was strong opposition to the proposal from the Social Democrats who do not believe the new system is of use and says that it goes against fundamental rights.
