Children Receive Compensation for Witnessed Violence

Since one year ago, any child in Sweden who witnesses violence is eligible for compensation from the government.

The most common cases included children who have heard or seen physical abuse, threats and abuse against women.

Since November 2006 when the new laws were put into effect, the Swedish Crime Victim Compensation and Support Authority has received 248 applications for compensation.

So far a total of 84,000 US Dollars has been paid to 79 children, with almost the same number of children being denied compensation.

A spokesperson from the Authority said that more children could have received compensation if they had been included in the documentation of the case.
