Murder Tarnishes Thai Tourist Industry

Popular Holiday Destination: Thailand's Beaches

A Thai man was arrested Wednesday after confessing that he murdered a 26-year-old Swedish holidaymaker on Saturday.

The 31-year-old man has apologized to the woman’s family.  He admitted to killing the Swede during an attempted rape.

The woman had left the tent she was staying in with a friend to take a walk on one of Phuket’s beaches, where she was later found dead.

News agency AFP cites Phuket Governor Niran Gallayanamit as saying that the case had tarnished the tourist industry.  Thailand has long been the number one destination for sun-seeking Swedish holidaymakers.
