Deportation of Refugees to Kabul Stopped

The deportation of Afghani refugees to Kabul was stopped by police at the eleventh hour at the Swedish Foreign Ministry’s and UNHCR’s request.

19 Afghans were scheduled for deportation, but only 6 were actually deported today.

Afghani authorities are said to have reacted against the planned deportations.  One of the reasons quoted by news agencies is that Afghanistan has just begun New Year celebrations.

Swedish Radio News quotes the Swedish Police Service’s Per Löwenberg as saying diplomatic issues lay behind the decision.  Löwenberg said an agreement between Afghanistan, Sweden and the UN’s refugee body would have been put at risk had the 19 been deported.
