School Minister Jan Björklund

Swedish Language Support for Teenage Immigrants

Immigrant pupils needing extra Swedish lessons may participate in a special language program at secondary school.

In an interview with Swedish Radio, the Minister of Education Jan Björklund criticised the current practice of lumping immigrant teen pupils with underperforming Swedish students on so-called ”individual programs”. Instead, he suggests introducing a special language program for immigrant pupils so that they gain the language skills to succeed in secondary school.

At present, every fourth student on the so-called “individual programs” is of immigrant background.
