Swedes’ Opposition to NATO Declines

An increasing number of Swedes would like to see their country join NATO, but the vast majority of the Swedish population still opposes a membership.

An opinion poll carried out by polling firm Sifo and published in daily Svenska Dagbladet shows that 29 percent of Swedes are in favor of a NATO-membership, whereas 53 percent strongly reject it.

Even though Sweden is not a full member of the strategic alliance, the country takes part in particular NATO missions, such as in Afghanistan or on the Balkans.

On Thursday Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, Foreign Minister Carl Bildt and Defense Minister Sten Tolgfors are attending the NATO summit in Bucharest/Romania.
