Illegal Fridge Export Stopped

Published torsdag 3 april 2008 kl 11.12

A truck carrying 50 old fridges, bound for Nigeria, has been stopped by Swedish authorities at a port in Gothenburg.

It’s thought the fridges were to be exported to Nigeria to be sold or destroyed, something which is illegal in Sweden, as the fridges are thought to contain pollutants including Freons. It’s also illegal to export old electrical goods outside the member countries of the OECD.

The truck was so jam-packed full of the fridges that the authorities didn’t dare open it in the queue to the boat, in case they’d fall out and damage surrounding vehicles.
