Fisherman to Blame for Poison Algae?

Swedish marine biologists report that chemical fertilizers pouring into the badly polluted Baltic Sea may not be that responsible for the yearly blue-green algae bloom covering much of the coastlines and island beeches.

The real culprit could be the fishermen from Sweden and all the other Baltic nations – depleting the once large quantities of cod, which feed on the smaller herring ... which eat up the algae.

In the warm summer weather, the algae releases yellow-green swirls of poisonous clouds on the water’s surface – especially harmful to children and dogs – and making bathing along the coast line and islands impossible.
