Swedes In China Describe Quake Devastation

Sweden’s National newspapers all carry eye witness accounts from Swedes living in South-Western China who experienced the devastating effects of Monday’s earthquake which has claimed at least 12,000 lives with many more believed to be buried beneath the rubble.

The SVD newspaper reported the story of a 20 year old Swedish student living in the university town of Chengdu who was told to spend Monday night sleeping outdoors for his protection.

Dagens Nyheter spoke to another student in Chengdu who reported of several strong aftershocks which sent people running in the streets.

The quake, measuring 7.9 on the richter scale, is China’s worst in thirty years, and was felt as far away as Beijing and the Thai capital Bangkok.
