Appalling Working Conditions Unveiled In New TV Documentary

Published onsdag 14 maj 2008 kl 11.53

Swedish Telecom Equipment manufacturer Ericsson, and Norwegian Telenor have pulled out of deals with subcontractors in Bangladesh following revelations in a TV-documentary of poor working conditions and child labour.

The programme showed workers galvanising mobile phone masts in vats of molten zinc up to 460 degrees Celsius, without any protective clothing, child workers as young as 14, and untreated waste water being released onto local farmland, damaging crops.

Ericsson has now cancelled it’s contracts with 2 out of it’s 3 subcontractors in the country, and is to start new negotiations with the third to improve working conditions.
