Healthcare for Undocumented Migrants

Published torsdag 15 maj 2008 kl 09.50
Demonstration for healthcare for undocumented migrants

Migration Minister Tobias Billström seems to be softening his hardline stance restricting healthcare for foreign citizens who are in Sweden illegally.

The four parties in the center-right government have been split on the issue.

Social and Health Minister Göran Hägglund’s Christian Democrats and the Liberal Party have been calling for a more generous approach.

Currently, with the exception of some children, illegal immigrants here have to bear the full cost of any medical care, which can be very expensive. Now Billström, a member of the conservative Moderate party, tells TV4 News that he is open to providing free healthcare to pregnant women and all children who are in this country without permission.
