Only One Applicant for EU Top Job

Sweden’s center-right coalition government is facing a dilemma as it has only one applicant for the top job of Sweden’s Ambassador to the European Union in Brussels.

The applicant is Lars Danielsson, the right hand of former Social Democratic Prime Minister Göran Persson. Danielsson who is currently working as a civil servant at the Foreign Ministry in Stockholm, has applied for 17 ambassador posts since the center-right government came into power two years ago. 15 of these positions went to other applicants.

It is said that Foreign Minister Carl Bildt wants to avoid that Danielsson gets a top position within Sweden’s diplomatic corps as he is being blamed for the mishandling of the Tsunami catastrophe in 2004.

But since Danielsson is the only applicant left in the race for the Brussels Ambassador, he might become the inevitable candidate.
