Supreme Commmander Håkan Syrén

Planned Cuts in Defense Budget Cause Outrage

The planned cuts in Sweden’s defense budget as proposed by Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces Håkan Syrén on Thursday have caused an outrage among politicians.

Minister of Defense Sten Tolgfors called the Supreme Commander’s plans “striking”. According to domestic politics commentators Syrén’s evaluation of the country’s security situation contradicts to what the vast majority of politicians think.

On Thursday, Syrén announced that the armed forces will cut back up to 2,500 jobs in order to reduce expenses. Syrén went on justifying the cut backs with the fact that Sweden is not likely to be attacked in the coming five to 10 years.
