Defense Cuts: Bildt Sees No Reason to Worry
For the first time Foreign Minister Carl Bildt has commented on the debate on planned cuts in the national defense budget.
In an interview with Swedish Radio news Bildt maintained that the open argument between Minister of Defense Sten Tolgfors and the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Håkan Syrén, was not as heated as the Swedish media claims.
According to Bildt both Tolgfors and Syrén have almost the same evaluation when it comes to a possible military threat posed by Russia. Bildt suggested a security policy towards Russia that is based on facts, not on fears.
Last Thursday Supreme Commander Syrén announced that up to 2,500 jobs within Sweden’s defense could be cut back – which lead to an outrage among some politicians.
