Sweden Says No To US Chicken

Sweden’s Agriculture Minister Eskil Erlandssson says he doesn’t want chemically treated chicken from the US to be allowed in the EU.

The European Commission is pushing for the chicken to be allowed into European shops, but Erlandsson says he is worried that bacteria might become resistant to the procedure, opening a whole new can of worms.

American poultry farmers sometimes clean the plucked chickens with chlorine and other chemicals to kill any salmonella bugs.

Sweden currently also has its own exemption from European rules, demanding certificates proving any meat imported into Sweden is salmonella free, and Erlandsson says he is worried the Swedish exemption might be under threat if the commission allows the US Chicken into the EU.
