Green Party Faces Crucial Decision

Peter Eriksson and Maria Wetterstrand

The Green Party is facing a crucial decision as its convention kicks off in Östersund on Friday. One of the main topics of the party congress this weekend will be the question whether or not the Greens should continue demanding that Sweden leave the European Union.

Several high profile party members – including the two chairpersons Maria Wetterstrand and Peter Eriksson – have come out earlier in favor of endorsing Sweden’s EU membership.

Both Wetterstrand and Eriksson have proposed to conduct a poll among all party members to decide upon the question.

Recent polls have shown that 44 percent of Green Party members want Sweden to stay in the EU, 26 percent is still opposed to a membership.
