State Education for Imams

Muslim clergymen might have to undergo a state education before they can start working in their profession.

Speaking to news agency TT Minister for Higher Education and Research Lars Leijonborg said he has appointed a state researcher to investigate the issue.

According to Leijonborg imams generally know too little about Swedish society. If asked whether somebody’s daughter should be sent to Mocambique for circumcision, an imam ought to know that this is forbidden according to Swedish law, Leijonborg said.

By introducing a state education, the center-right government wants to avoid extremists to become imams in Sweden.
