Large Scale Defence Cuts Recommended
A Commission report presented to Sweden’s Defence Minister on Friday has called for sweeping cuts in the country’s armed forces, including reductions in officer numbers and bureaucracy jobs.
The commission containing politicians from all 7 of Sweden’s parliamentary parties, presented a series of recommendations following months of evaluation of Sweden’s armed forces.
Under the recommendations, National service conscripts would no longer be used in operational forces. These instead will be made up of volunteers signing up for full time jobs in the forces.
Another recommendation is to reform bureaucracy in the forces with the various authorities amalgamated into one authority.
Long serving officers would also be forced to find new employment.
Military hardware such as tanks and jet fighters would be decreased.
