F is for Fotboll

F is for fotboll, which is the Swedish word for what we Americans and Canadians, and maybe some Australians call soccer, and which everyone else calls football.

It’s Sweden’s number two favorite sport, after ice hockey, and unlike much of the rest of Europe, fotboll is played here in the summer. There’s just a bit too much snow in Sweden to play during the winter.

The premier division here is called All-svenskan, and includes such historic teams as the cross town Stockholm rivals Hammarby, Djurgården, and AIK, whose followers call themselves the Black Army.

Women’s fotboll is very popular here, and the national team captured the silver medal in the 2003 Women’s World Cup.

Perhaps the high point for the men’s team was when they took third place in the 1994 World Cup, held in the United States, and commemorated in the song “När vi graver guld I USA”, “When We Dig for Gold in the USA”.
