New Laws Put Women in Chains

Today, 1st July, sees new laws come into effect in Sweden. One of the most controversial laws is the Vårdnadsbidrag proposed by the Christian Democrats. It gives money to people who stay home to look after their children when they are young.

But, the opposition argue, the majority claiming the benefits will be women who will then experience problems when they eventually try and get back on to the job market again.

In downtown Stockholm today female members of the Social Democrats and Stockholm University Student Union chained themselves to benches to demonstrate the position they believe many women will find themselves in if they become reliant on the money offered to them from the state.
