More Foreign Doctors Apply for Swedish Certification

Since the expansion of the European Union in 2004, the number of doctors applying for the certificate of registration that allows them to practice in Sweden has increased dramatically, reports Swedish Radio news.

According to figures from the National Board of Health and Welfare more than 1000 European doctors sent in applications last year, a rise of 28 percent compared to 2006.

A spokesperson for the Board says the reason behind the increase is a combination of the lack of Swedish doctors and the high unemployment rates in the profession in southern Europe.
