Social Democrats Predict Pharmacy Oligopoly

The Social Democrats say the Swedish pharmacy market will be dominated by a few large companies after the government deregulated the monopoly held by state-owned Apoteket.

The parliamentary inquiry commissioned by the Social Democrats found that only a handful of companies own the majority of the retail trade in medicines in Europe.

They say the new system does not allow for competition as hoped.

Boots from the UK and the German Celesio are just two of the big name brands that the party say are reluctant to let into the Swedish market.
