Job Losses Rise

Twenty-four thousand people have been laid off work already this year, a dramatic rise from last year.

Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet reports 62 percent more people were given notice from their jobs in the first six months of this year compared to the year before.

Companies on the traditionally industrial west coast are among those in the country that have lost the most employees. Volvo and other large Swedish companies like Autoliv and Sony Ericsson are in the top ten.

Companies act fast to lay off workers as soon as their sales decrease so as not to risk having too many employees, say experts.
