New Vaccine for "Blue Tongue" Livestock Disease

Swedish veterinarians say they are working feverishly on a new vaccine against the disease called ”blue tongue” – infecting animals killing livestock in a large area of southern Sweden and killing some.

So far, some 70,000 cattle and sheep have been vaccinated with older vaccines - but it’s not sure how effective the new vaccine is since it’s only been tested on a few animals in the laboratory.

The disease is painful for those animals which survive - but is not transmitted to human beings.
