Swedish hockey legend Mats Sundin received standing ovations in his hometown Stockholm on Saturday as he dropped the puck on the ice of the Globen arena for the face-off in the NHL-season opener between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Ottawa Senators. In this historic first series debut this side of the Atlantic the Penguins beat the Senators 4:3. In Sunday’s return match Ottawa won 3:1, with two assists from Daniel Alfredsson.

For the fourth year in a row the championship in ladies’ soccer was secured by Umeå. The renewed success was greatly due to the performance of Brazilian star Marta, who has been crowned as the world’s number one player.

Swedish Audi driver Mattias Ekström, reigning champion in the German DTM stock car series, won his third race of the season at Le Mans on Sunday. This year’s championship will be decided in the last race at Hockenheim three weeks from now between German points leader Timo Scheider on Audi and Scottish Mercedes driver Paul di Resta.
