UN workers’ family members to leave Pakistan

Amid growing concern for the safety of foreigners in Pakistan family members of Swedish UN personnel stationed in the northwestern part of the country have been ordered to leave for home. Deteriorating security in the border region between Pakistan and Afghanistan has prompted the decision to evacuate relatives.

So far, the staff of the Swedish embassy in Islamabad has not followed suit, but it is said that the situation is being cautiously monitored. Western diplomats in Pakistan have recently been receiving a growing number of anonymous death threats, believed to come from Taliban sympathizers.
