Rune Elmquist's original pacemaker

Swedish-designed pacemaker turns 50

Swedes are remembering this Wednesday as the 50th anniversary of the introduction of the implanted pacemaker. In 1958 Swedish doctors Rune Elmquist and Åke Senning installed the first electronic heart-support device in a pioneer operation on a patient in Solna’s Karolinska Institute.

Rune Elmquist is credited with designing the first applicable pacemaker, which from then on has saved innumerable patients with heart conditions.
