Preparing for a 'dry run'..

Convicted drunks may drive alco-lock-equipped cars

The traffic ministry is considering suggestions of a group of experts to allow convicted drunk drivers to drive cars equipped with a so-called alco-lock. The device blocks the ignition in case the the driver’s breath reveals the intake of alcohol.

The expert group reasoned that this solution would prove more efficient than suspending drunk drivers’ licenses. So far, only a small number of cars on Sweden’s roads are euipped with alco-locks.

Legal obligation of auto manufacturers to install the device would have to be approved by the European Union, as it would affect economic competiton regulations.
