Swedish Relations with Belarus in Eastern Europe

Commenting on the situation in Belarus after the parliamentary elections there, Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt joins his EU colleagues in concluding that the elections violated democratic standards there – but that the release of political prisoners is a step in the right direction.

The EU has lifted travel restrictions against President Lukashenka – but not those suspected of fixing the elections or being behind the disappearance of critics of what is called the last dictatorship in Eastern Europe.

What is Sweden’s relationship to this nation known as “White Russia” just across the Baltic Sea behind Latvia and Lithuania.
